The commonest orchestral genre. Derived from the (fast-slow-fast) Italian overture towards the middle of the eighteenth century. The first movement is cast in sonata form. The second movement can be in sonata form or variations. The minuet is in ternary form. The finale is usually in sonata or sonata-rondo form.
