Dominant preparation
At the end of the development, the extensive use of dominant harmony. This helps to stabilise the harmony which is usually destabilised in the development and also create an expectation for the return of the tonic (recapitulation). Beethoven is very fond of massive dominant preparation before the double return (as in the Pathetique sonata)
